IAPMO EC 043 Compliance

A Standard for Temporary Ceiling Barriers

IAMPO tests ensure that a temporary ceiling barrier does more than catch dust during construction. It must stay in place while protecting the occupied space below and, when installed beneath fire sprinklers, respond appropriately during a fire. It gives project teams a way to review documented test results for the barrier’s strength, fire performance, and use beneath automatic sprinklers.

What Is IAPMO EC 043?

EC 043 is the Evaluation Criteria for Temporary Ceiling Construction Barriers, developed by IAPMO Uniform Evaluation Services. It sets out the testing and information needed for a temporary ceiling membrane to be recognized in an independent evaluation report. The report identifies the product and its conditions of use so building officials and project teams can review it for a proposed installation.

Why Does It Matter?

A suspended cover has two jobs on a reroofing project: contain debris from the work overhead and account for the fire protection system protecting the facility below. FM 4652 gives building owners, facility managers, and roofing contractors a way to identify debris barriers that have been independently evaluated for that application.

Strength

Testing the barrier, seams, and supports under applied loads.

Fire Exposure

Examines how the system responds under specified fire test conditions.

Sprinkler Performance

Testing whether the membrane melts or drops away when exposed to fire, including tests with sprinklers operating.

Installed System

Approval applies to the listed barrier system and its specified installation conditions.

Documentation

Documenting how the system is installed and any limits on its use.

Quality Control

Providing evidence that the evaluated product is manufactured consistently.

Why Does EC 043 Matter for Your Project?

  • A cover must hold up during construction. If a temporary barrier or its supports fail, dust and debris can fall into the occupied space it was installed to protect.
  • Fire performance needs evidence. A product that looks suitable for containment has not necessarily been evaluated for flame spread, smoke development, or use beneath sprinklers.
  • Sprinklers must be able to protect the space below. EC 043 includes tests of how a barrier releases during fire exposure so it does not remain between the sprinklers and the fire.
  • An evaluation report helps with project review. It gives your contractor, facility team, and building official documented product performance and installation conditions to consider before work begins.
