What Is ASTM E84 Class A?
ASTM E84 (Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials) is an internationally recognized test developed by ASTM International to evaluate how building materials respond when exposed to fire.
The test measures two important performance characteristics:
- Flame Spread Index (FSI): How quickly flames travel across the material's surface.
- Smoke Developed Index (SDI): The amount of smoke generated during the test.
Based on these results, materials are assigned a fire performance classification.
The 6-Point ASTM E84 Class A Criteria
Class A is the highest classification available under ASTM E84 for surface burning characteristics. Materials that achieve this rating demonstrate very low flame spread and smoke development compared to lower-rated materials. For commercial, industrial, healthcare, manufacturing, and institutional construction projects, specifying Class A materials helps support fire safety objectives while meeting the requirements of many building applications.

What ASTM E84 Class A Compliance Means for Your Project
- Your AHJ, fire marshal, and building official will recognize the system as code-compliant.
- Your facility's insurance coverage is not voided by the installation of a non-compliant barrier.
- Fire suppression systems remain fully functional throughout the project.
- Full documentation is available for specification packages and AHJ submissions.
