What Is the International Building Code?
The International Building Code (IBC) is the foundational standard for fire safety, structural integrity, and building performance in active commercial and industrial facilities across the United States. Developed through accredited, consensus-driven processes with ANSI oversight, it establishes the minimum requirements that any temporary interior construction barrier must meet to be legally and safely installed in an occupied building.
EC 043-2020 is the specific evaluation criteria under the IBC that addresses temporary suspended ceiling barriers — the most demanding and comprehensive standard in the industry for this product category.
The 6-Point IBC EC 043 Criteria
To achieve true IBC compliance, a suspended cover must meet every one of these six requirements. SmartSeam® meets all six — documented, tested, and independently verified by IAPMO.
Quality
Audited manufacturing quality — IAPMO conducts continuous production facility audits to verify ongoing compliance with the manufacturing process and quality assurance program.
Strength
Stays in place under pressure. Meets structural performance requirements of ASTM E330 Procedure A — the differential pressure test for construction barriers.
Effectiveness
Prevents dust and debris from entering the protected space below — verified through independent testing under real-world construction conditions.
Fire resistance
Flame retardant with acceptable flame propagation performance — meets ASTM E84 Class A, the highest classification for surface burning characteristics.
Durability
Performs reliably for the full duration of installation — not just at install. Performance maintained throughout the project lifecycle.
Safety
Opens up per code and partially drops out in a fire, but does not impede the sprinklers. Fully NFPA 13 compatible — the standard for sprinkler system installation.
What IBC EC 043 Compliance Means for Your Project
- Your AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction), fire marshal, and building official will recognize the system as code-compliant — no re-engineering, no surprises at inspection
- Your facility's insurance coverage is not voided by the installation of a non-compliant barrier
- Fire suppression systems remain fully functional throughout the project — the ceiling opens only where heat from a fire is present
- Full documentation is available for specification packages, AHJ submissions, and insurance verification
