UL 723S Compliance

A Safety Standard for Drop-Out Ceiling Performance Beneath Automatic Sprinklers

When temporary ceiling barriers are installed beneath automatic sprinkler systems, they must allow those sprinklers to perform as intended during a fire. UL 723S is the industry standard used to evaluate drop-out ceiling assemblies installed beneath automatic sprinklers, verifying that ceiling systems release appropriately when exposed to fire conditions.

What Is UL 723S?

UL 723S is the Outline of Investigation for Drop-Out Ceilings Installed Beneath Automatic Sprinklers. It evaluates ceiling systems intended to drop away from their supports during fire conditions, exposing the sprinklers and allowing them to protect the area below.

Why Does UL 723S Matter for Your Project?

A temporary ceiling barrier sits between the sprinklers and the space they protect. During reroofing, a suspended cover keeps dust and debris out of the facility below. In a fire, that same cover could trap heat beneath it or prevent sprinkler water from reaching the fire if it does not open as intended. UL 723S gives your team tested evidence to review. A UL 723S Classification shows that the specified ceiling system has been independently evaluated for installation beneath automatic sprinklers. That is more useful during project planning than assuming a barrier will release because its material appears thin or lightweight.

SmartSeam® Suspend Cover is UL Classified to UL 723S for installation beneath automatic sprinklers.

What Does a UL 723s Approval Mean for Your Project?

  • You can show that the cover was tested for use beneath sprinklers.
  • You can address a fire safety concern before work starts.
  • You reduce the chance of a costly change mid-project.
