Food Processing Facility Protected by Hybrid Walls

OVERVIEW

EMR, a major food manufacturer, had two simultaneous production line overhauls at once. TuffWrap Installations partnered with their general contractor to protect the facilities from cross contamination during the long-term construction projects. 

CHALLENGE

TuffWrap had to develop a solution that would minimize the possibility of cross-contamination between the construction & production environments while the facility remained operational. To accomplish this goal, four specific areas needed to be addressed:

  • Protect common corridors of travel for both equipment & personnel
  • Protect against airborne contamination
  • Protect against contamination from exterior sources
  • Guard storage and warehouse spaces

SOLUTION

An integral partner with the general contractor and the manufacturer, TuffWrap implemented customized solutions based on the daily operational and food safety requirements the plant must meet.

TuffWrap developed similar solutions for both facilities, installing Hybrid Walls in both locations. The hybrid walls ensured that the existing production lines were protected and accessible for equipment and personnel. They also provided an additional layer of support at the bottom of the wall, allowing for stronger resistance to impact. As with any standard containment solution, the barriers were sealed ceiling to floor. In addition, TuffWrap established Access Points necessary for employees and contractors to pass through. Personnel entry and exit utilized Custom Pocket Doors.

Additional specialized solutions were incorporated, including aluminum and hinged equipment doors where needed. TuffWrap built Isolation Vestibules to ensure contaminants did not spread further than the construction zone.

Over the course of a year, the planned Solutions successfully protected both facilities from any construction-related food safety issues. To identify if the facility had been contaminated swab tests were taken on a regular basis. The swab tests repeatedly confirmed that the containment solution provided complete protection. The entire solution stayed intact until the new processes replaced them and the work completed. TuffWrap® Hybrid Walls segregated the impacted areas while still allowing the facility to function.

CONCLUSION

The major food manufacturer needed to manage two production line overhauls without the additional worries about unwanted cross contamination. TuffWrap Hybrid Walls and custom solutions provided complete protection in the highly sensitive environment.
